English II
10th Grade
Mrs. Lisa Rule
High School: 646-0700
lrule@chillicotheschools.org
Plan Hour: 3rd
Room: B24
Materials:
You should have a spiral notebook or a portion of a 3-ring binder to keep your English II materials in. A pocketed folder will also be helpful. Always come with a pen or pencil and the textbook we are using during that section.
Writing Intensive Course:
Students will be assigned a variety of different writing examples. Each assignment will be divided into pre-writing, rough draft, peer editing, and final copy. You will include the following in your portfolio: job application, consumer complaint packet, memo, personal essay, persuasive essay, literary analysis, and research paper.
Bell Work:
Check the side board for the day’s Journal Task or “MUG” task. These are submitted for points on a daily basis.
Accelerated Reader:
Students will be required to earn 30 points per quarter. The AR points represent 15% of the quarter grade. Students will be given the occasional opportunity to read in class. It is always a good idea to have an outside reading book with you.
Vocabulary:
Lessons will be assigned most Mondays and due most Thursdays. Spelling and vocabulary tests will be on Fridays. There will be a test after six lessons.
Research Paper:
Students will write a 3-4 page research paper at the beginning of third quarter. Since this is a labor intensive process, we will be devoting most of our class time during that section to the research paper project.
30 Days of Poetry:
Even students who detest writing poetry will become more at ease with the process. You will exercise your creativity and originality. Grades are based on individual assignments as well as a portfolio.
Night
Students will read Night by Elie Wiesel and will be tested over the novel and its implications to the Holocaust.
Homework:
Expect homework.
Grading Scale:
Students will be graded according to the following scale:
A 96-100
B+ 87-89
B 83-86
B- 80-82
C+ 77-79
C 73-76
C- 70-72
D+ 67-69
D 63-66
D- 60-62
F 0-59
Late Work:
You should always have work done on time. Daily assignments will be accepted late the next day with a 40% penalty. Larger projects and papers will not be accepted late.
Absences:
Students with excused absences should check for work upon return to class. You will be given double the amount of time to make up that work. An exam missed during an excused absence must be taken upon the student’s return to school. Students with an unexcused absence will not be allowed to make up work.
Cheating/Plagiarism:
Each student should do his or her own work. Cheating or plagiarism will result in a “zero” for the assignment and disciplinary action.
Classroom Rules:
Arrive Prepared
Show Respect
Expect the Best
Maintain a Positive Attitude
Shun Food, Drink, & Phone
Final Comments:
We are going to have a wonderful year in English II. Let’s accomplish great things! |
